The Chipi-X10

The Chipi-X10  is the latest cost effective version of FTDI's USB to RS232 converter cable range. It also serves as an evaluation cable for the FT231X. It utilises the minimum number of components required for a basic USB - RS232 converter designed using the FT231XS. Using the FT231X chip combined with an RS232 level converter and a few capacitors. Chipi-X10 is CE and FCC approved and  is one of the simplest USB - RS232 solutions around.
Using a standard DB9 connector and powered from the USB port, the Chipi-X10 converter can be used with FTDI's VCP drivers to provide a COM port on a PC which is capable of communication rates with RS232 devices, from 300 Baud up to 250kBaud.
This version of the Chipi - X10 is supplied with a sculpted matt white plastic enclosure fitted, which covers the electronics inside.  A 10cm USB cable is fitted.
The Chipi-X10 is fully RoHS compliant and is supplied loose packed in an anti-static bag. Read more rs232

easy substitution of USB for RS-232

An easy substitution of USB for RS-232 Let us solve the next task: Given a laptop without a com-port and a plane with a com-port. We need to connect these. We can use a USB to COM transition adapter in the form of a memory stick, then find an appropriate cable and carry them along all the time... not the best option. Another way to solve the problem forever in 15 minutes is using a standard USB cable for connection. What can help us is DB9-USB-F and DB9-USB-M modules created by FTDI company for direct substitution of slots with an incircuit USB socket for the existing DB9 slots (both plugs and sockets) with the purpose of connection according to RS232. The modules substitute (slot to slot) DB9 plugs and sockets for connection according to RS232 through a mini-USB B slot. The main point is that the device printing plate with the DB9 RS232 slot does not need any modification - it is enough to substitute an appropriate DB9-USB module for a D-type slot DB9 plug is to be substituted for with a DB9-USB-M plug, and a socket - with a DB9-USB-F socket. The modules have inside all electronics necessary to make transformations between USB and RS232 - a USB-Serial bridge FT232R microcircuit chip and level shift systems. RS232 signals, including modem service signals, can be transmitted at a speed of up to 1 Mbaud. DB9-USB needs USB device drivers available at www.ftdichip.com that enable the system to see DB9-USB as a virtual COM-port. This allows the existing software to exchange data through DB9-USB-RS232 as an ordinary peripheral RS232 device. The module is powered from the USB port and can function at temperatures from -40°C to +85°C. Now you can easily substitute USB for a COM-port your old device, thus providing it with a new life and enabling connection to a laptop. All you need is half hour of spare time, a solderer and an F or M DB9-USB module.
